Meet Kathy!

Today I’d like to do a “Get to Know Me” post.  Since I’ve been posting my experiences and giving recommendations, I thought perhaps you should know a little more about me.

I was born in the Midwest, but my family moved to California when I was two years old.  Basically I am a Californian with Midwestern values taught me by my parents.

I’ll skip ahead to college where I graduated from Cal. State University, Chico, with a B.A. in Psychology, focusing on child and adolescent psychology.

All of my work for the first few years after college was with children and teenagers.  I was a counselor in a private group home for teenage girls; I worked as a counselor in juvenile hall in the girls’ unit; I was housemother/primary caregiver for 12 abused children at a large facility in southern California; and from there I was a housemother/primary caregiver in a group home for 6 teenage girls.

I moved to San Diego to work on my Master’s degree in Social Work, but after a year of study I switched my degree to Telecommunications when I realized that what I really wanted to do was to write – I focused on screenplay writing.  During this time I worked at another center for abused children/adolescents.  From there I needed a job to work around my school hours, so I took a job with a healthcare agency, working primarily with the elderly.  I had never intended to work with seniors.  I had always wanted to work with children, but once I began working with seniors I found that I enjoyed the work and adored the people in this age group.  I left the agency and became self-employed as a caregiver.  During this time I was employed for about 10 years with a high school district, working in special education; but I continued to work with the elderly in the afternoon after school.  Thus began my 35+ years as a caregiver for seniors; and it has been a most rewarding career.

Some other “fun facts” about me are:

The greatest blessing in my life has been, and continues to be, motherhood.  I love being a mom!

I am a Spirit-filled Christian, gifted in intercessory prayer – so please let me know whenever you have a prayer request.

I am part of a large family and always love our family gatherings.

My favorites in the animal kingdom are border collies, hummingbirds, red-tailed hawks, dragonflies, and dolphins and whales.

I enjoy watching pro-football, and particularly love the autumn weather.

I love to laugh, and will try to find the humor in life.  I’ve been known to laugh so hard I snort (not my most attractive quality, but a good laugh is so important these days!)

Christmas is my favorite holiday – not only do I celebrate the birth of Jesus, but I find so much joy in the Christmas decorations, Christmas music, and all else that is Christmas.

I love bright colors and anything that sparkles and glitters.  Yes, I do love shiny objects.

Oh!  And I love writing – I have loved the art of writing since elementary school.  There is a feeling indescribable about putting a pen to paper and creating something magical with words.

So, that is me, in a nutshell – the condensed version of 61 wonderful years of life!
